The
St. Louis Arch
Date Painted:
February 21, 2000
Size: 9 X 12 inches
Medium: Oil on Stretched
Canvas
Price: $300 00
|
Info
About This Piece,
This plein air painting was done
from a loading pier located on
the river front south of the
city. It was a cold overcast
February day and the industrial
area was gritty and run-down, but
it was just right to capture the
contrasts I wanted in this
cityscape. I painted this picture
in the company of several other
artists from the Missouri Plein
air Painters Association.

Info
About This Piece,
I was with my son, Shawn, on a plein air
paint-out at the Kirkwood, Missouri Outdoor
Farmer's Market. We set up our easels around 9
a.m. as the various vegetable and flower markets
were opening. I found this appealing scene in
the flower market. Soon after we set up, the
morning sun began to fade behind gathering
clouds. The weather forecast was for rain
beginning around 2 p.m. and it turned out to be
quite accurate. Fortunately, just as we finished
our paintings, the skies opened up so we quickly
loaded our belongings into the car and headed
for home. |

Medium:
Oil on Pintura Canvas Panel
Price: $775
|
Info
About This Piece,
This painting was done following the first
significant snowfall of the winter in 2002.
While I painted, the afternoon sky began to
clear and a pink glow spread over the forest.
This scene is located in the artist’s back yard
so there were none of the problems normally
associated with cold and wet conditions while
painting on location in winter.

Info
About This Piece,
I set up my easel to paint on the
bank of this small stream in
Castlewood State Park near
Ballwin, Missouri. The day
started off beautifully, but
around noon, a sudden cloudburst
dumped nearly an inch of rain.
What was a peaceful stream became
a raging torrent and I quickly
moved my easel to higher ground
and ran for shelter. Within an
hour the rain let up and the sun
broke through. The stream quickly
began to recede so I again set up
my easel and was able to finish
this painting by late afternoon.

PUMPKINS AT
ECKERT'S FARM
Date Painted: October
20, 2004
Size:11 X 14 inches
Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas
Panel
Price: $390
|
Info
About This Piece,
Each October, I like to paint the
pumpkin patch at Eckerts
Farm near Belleville, Illinois.
In previous years children and
their parents would ride out into
the fields on a tractor-pulled
wagon. There they would select
pumpkins of just the right size
and shape, and then carry them to
back the wagon. This year
however, the pumpkins were of
giant proportions far too
heavy to carry, so they were
trucked over to Eckerts
Store for sale. The excitement
generated by these beauties was
something to behold!

Info
About This Piece,
This stream, which is dry during
much of the year, was flowing
full after a heavy winter rain.
The sky was overcast and the
temperature was just above
freezing. There were still some
leaves with fall colors, and
water dripped from overhead
branches. The surrounding woods
were in deep shadow, but a shaft
of sunlight suddenly made the
scene sparkle with light.

VIEW FROM THE
MERAMEC RIVER BLUFFS
Date Painted:
December 5, 2004
Size: 9 X 12 inches
Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas
Panel
Price: $*300
|
Info
About This Piece,
Each Winter I like to paint
scenes from the high limestone
bluffs that overlook the Meramec
River Valley. These bluffs are
located in Castlewood State Park
near Ballwin, Missouri. By
November, most of leaves are gone
from the trees, opening the
distant views for painting. This
scene looks down the valley
toward a number of homes and
farms, with some structures
visible on the distant hillside. |

Info
About This Piece,
This painting was done in St.
Louis Tower Grove Park at
one of the several lily ponds. I
liked the white and ivory colors
of the flowers and the greens of
the lily pads. Bright orange
goldfish were hiding in the
shadows beneath these pads, and
would swim out into the light
from time to time. |

DECEMBER SNOWFALL
Date Painted: December
14, 2003
Size: 12 X 12
inches
Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas
Panel
Price: $380
|
Info
About This Piece,
The temperature was well below
freezing when I gathered with a
group of fellow plein air
painters in the winter of 2003 to
capture some typical snow scenes
in the Shaw Nature Reserve. This
scene immediately caught my
attention. The bright sparkle of
sunlight on snow-laden limbs
contrasted nicely with the cold
dark shadows of the background
trees. I quickly set to work as
it was rather cold, but with
occasional warm-up visits to a
nearby shelter, I was able to
complete work on this painting.

Info
About This Piece,
Several months before I did this
painting, Rangers at Castlewood
State Park, Missouri, had
relocated a family of beavers
from their dam on this stream, Kiefer Creek, to
a safer and more remote area.
Winter runoff threatened to break
the dam with potential for
flooding, so the rangers
carefully removed sections to
permit controlled relief. The
ensuing out-flow eroded this
stream bank and the tree leaned,
but held fast while a beautiful
blue-green pool was carved out
beneath. I could easily imagine
this pool became home for some
large trout.

FALL COLORS
Date Painted: October
10, 2003
Size: 24 X 30 inches
Medium: Oil on Stretched
Canvas
Price: $1500
|
Info
About This Piece,
This painting was done in the
artists back yard. It
evolved with several applications
of color as the Fall days passed
(resulting in extra thickness of
paint on the canvas). I finished
the painting just as the cold
winds began stripping some of the
more brightly colored leaves from
the maples. Fall, though a
beautiful time of year, can evoke
a feeling of sadness with the
passing of summer. Some of that
feeling shows through in this
painting.

Info
About This Piece,
I painted this picture of downtown Lebanon
during an outing with a group of artists from
the Missouri Plein air artists association (MOPAPA).
Lebanon is my home and it is a great place for
artists thanks to the many scenes of historic
interest. This scene looks eastward down the
brick pavements of St. Louis Street. It was a
warm August day so I set up my easel in the
shade of a shop canopy. This location gave a
clear view across the street and down the length
of these beautiful old Victorian buildings. |

This painting shows masses of white water lilies
that bloom in the Silver Creek ponds along
Highway 50, just west of Lebanon, Illinois.
Throughout the summer months, these ponds
produce a spectacular array of creamy white

round lily pads provide shade and protection for
muskrats, turtles and small fish that inhabit
these ponds.

About This Piece,
This is a painting of the Harpeth
River in Tennessee. Although this
is not a plein air painting, the
photo I used for reference
brought back memories from the
years when I fished for bass and
channel catfish in rivers much
like the Harpeth. While living
there I gained an appreciation
for the beauty of
Tennessees rugged
mountains, deep lakes and scenic
rivers. The sparkle of early
morning sun on fresh snow creates
a scene that few artists could
resist! |

Info
About This Piece,
This painting depicts a typical
Spring-time scene at the Shaw
Nature Reserve near Grays
Summit, Missouri. The pink tulip
trees, bright white cherries and
brilliant yellow daffodils are
nicely contrasted against a stand
of dark pines. I like to return
to this spot each Spring with
fellow artists to enjoy painting
new versions of this old
favorite.

Info
About This Piece,
This plein air painting is an
actual scene from the

the morning sun. The layers of
mist that had settled into the
valley during the night glowed as
if illuminated from within.
