Cornell’s interest in
landscape painting began while growing up in the Sierra Nevada foothills
and mountains of Northern California, where he was privileged to study
under several local plein air artists. He continued his pursuit of
art during his high school and college years, but ultimately found
his livelihood as a civil engineer. Upon leaving college, he entered
the U.S. Air Force. During his 31-year career, he was stationed at
locations around the world and achieved the rank of Brigadier General.
During these years, he never lost his interest in landscape painting
and was able to learn from the works of artists in Europe, Asia and
the Middle East. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he spent
time as a Senior Engineer with several International Firms and was
again privileged to observe the works and techniques of landscape
artists from many locations.
Since retiring from the Air Force in 1987, Cornell has painted en
plein air in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Missouri and
New Mexico. He has participated in numerous local exhibits and events
including Artists Along The Katy Trail in Missouri; Augusta, Missouri
Art Show; Highland Art in the Park Show; Central West End, St Louis,
Missouri Art Show; Componere Gallery Show, St. Louis, Missouri; Studio
111 Miniatures Art Show, O’Fallon, Illinois; Shaw Nature Reserve
Plein Air Artists’ Show, Summit, Missouri; and the Gateway East
Artists’ Guild annual shows in Belleville, Illinois.
Cornell makes it a point to paint each day and has attended workshops
in Colorado, Wyoming, Illinois and Missouri. He participates in weekly “paint-out”
events with other plein air artists, regardless of weather conditions,
finding that each paint-out provides a fresh learning experience,
with opportunities for constructive critiques, an exchange of ideas
with fellow artists, and conversations with interested onlookers.
In addition to full time painting, he also gives private lessons,
finding it a satisfying and rewarding experience. Today the artist
has a body of work exceeding 70 original oil paintings, though this
varies over time with creation and sales.
Along with his son Shawn, David Cornell is a founding member of the
Missouri Plein Air Painters’ Association. He belongs to the
North Missouri Arts Council, the Highland Arts Council, and the Gateway
East Artists’ Guild. Cornell is also on the Artists’ Registry
for Charitable Events, participating in six charity art events over
the past year. philosophy
