SPRING FLOWERS
Location, Shaw Nature Reserve,
Missouri
Date Painted: March 25, 2007
Size: 24 X 18 inches
Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas Panel
Price: $970
|
Info
About This Piece,
I painted this scene on a beautiful spring
morning at the Shaw Nature Reserve near Gray's
Summit in Missouri. The tulip trees and
daffodils were in full bloom and seemed to rival
each other for the most colorful display. The
dark pines in the background established a fine
contrast that further enhanced their vibrant
colors. I was fortunate to have this time
because even as I painted, petals from the tulip
tree began to fall and I knew their glory would
soon be past. |

About This Piece,
This painting depicts a typical spring-time
scene at the Shaw Nature Reserve near Gray's
Summit, Missouri. The bright pink tulip trees in
bloom and the brilliant yellows of the daffodils
in the foreground were nicely contrasted against
a stand of dark pines. I found this scene most
inviting for a plein air painting. With fellow
artists, I have returned to this spot each
spring to enjoy painting new versions of this
old favorite. |

OLD OAK TREE
Location:Shaw Nature Reserve
Date Painted: November 9, 2007
Size: 12 X 16 inches
Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas Panel
Price: $500
|
Info
About This Piece,
This magnificent old oak tree stands alone in a
meadow at the edge of the forest. Background
trees provide a multicolored backdrop of
yellows, reds and greens, while honeysuckle
vines surround the roots and try to climb the
massive trunk. I can imagine this tree as a
young sapling at the time Henry Shaw built the
Bascom House and set aside this beautiful land
the Shaw Nature Reserve. |

About This Piece,
This painting was done at a restored frontier
homestead in Faust Park, Missouri (best know for
the Butterfly House). I was attracted to the
scene by the many shades of green in the
cabbages. Amid the tangle of leaves were a few
perfect heads of cabbage, seemingly unharmed by
insects. This may be credited to the nearby bed
of bright orange marigolds. Apparently the early
farmers believed that marigolds would discourage
insects – and it appears that perhaps they were right!

BOUNTY FROM THE
GARDEN
Location: Lebanon, Illinois
Date Painted: September 23,
2008
Size: 12 X 9
inches
Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas Panel
Price: $325
|
Info
About This Piece,
Vegetable gardens seem to hit their peak in
August and September . This year, friends and
neighbors enjoyed bumper crops of tomatoes and
peppers in spite of limited summer rainfall. We
were the beneficiaries of this bounty, and when
the doorbell rang we would find that another
bundle of veggies had been delivered. As I
opened the paper bags and placed these beautiful
vegetables on the kitchen counter, I saw they
made a colorful composition. When I completed
this still life painting, we ate the veggies. My
father used to say: "You can't have your cake
and eat it too!" Well, maybe we found an
exception to that old saying. |

Info
About This Piece,
I painted this version of white water
lilies at one of the many ponds
in Tower Grove Park, St. Louis.
I have painted these ponds from several angles
and have begun to include the sequence number in
the title. These ponds are not large, but
they provide an abundance of
lilies in a rainbow of colors
from white to yellow, red and
blue. Their graceful leaves
present a variety of shapes,
patterns and tones, with colors
ranging from dark purple to
blue-green and celery. Gold fish
provided interesting contrasts in
shape and color as they moved
about in search of food and cover
beneath the floating leaves.

original structures remaining from the 1904

depicts the water lilies and broad-leaf water
plants growing in one of these ponds with an
image of the Jewel Box reflected in the
background.

Info
About This Piece,
These prickly pear cactus plants are located at
the Shrine of the Our Lady of the Snows in
Belleville, Illinois. They are planted along the
pathway leading to hillside shrine of Our Lady
of Guadeloupe. I was attracted by the bright
yellow and orange flowers and the new growth of
fresh green buds. This flowering and new bud
growth reminded me of the miracle of life
and rebirth - which seemed a fitting theme for
my painting. I quickly set up my easel and got
to work because darkening clouds and fresh
breezes suggested that rain might be on the way.
I finished painting just as the first raindrops
began to fall. |

Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas Panel
Price: $510
|
Info
About This Piece,
I hiked up one of the many trails in Castlewood
State Park, near Ballwin, Missouri with a group
of fellow artists to find this scene. The sun
had just burned off the morning frost and was
lighting brilliant colors on leaves clinging to
these trees and shrubs. Soon after we got
our easels set up, the temperature warmed and
were able to shed our heavy coats. Everyone
enjoyed painting visual records of this
beautiful Autumn day. |

Info
About This Piece,
I attended a plein air
painting workshop in Jackson
Hole, Wyoming with my son Shawn,
and our friend Dave Huth. Each
evening we would drive to a
nearby location to paint. When we
came upon this appealing scene we
stopped and quickly set up our
easels. Storm clouds began to
gather, and soon a cold
thunderstorm forced us pick up
and run for shelter. Fortunately,
by that time I had captured
sufficient information that I was
able to finish the painting
later.
