Info
About This Piece,
My son Shawn, is married to Elizabeth (Lodholz),
whose parents own a condominium at Lake Dillon
in Colorado. This picture was photographed by
Richard and Rita Lodholz on a frosty December
morning from their balcony. When I received this
photo by e-mail I was captivated by the lively
colors and fantastic scenery. It was an easy
decision to try this oil painting and the
outcome was quite satisfying. I hope someday to
try a plein air painting from this same
location for comparison of results.

SNOWFALL
Location: South Western
Illinois
Date Painted: December 2, 2009
Size: 18 X 24 inches
Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas Panel
Price: $1,000
|
Info
About This Piece,
I wanted to find a suitable winter scene for our
2009 Christmas Card, and "googled" SNOW SCENES
on my computer. The number of really beautiful
photographs that came up was amazing! I
particularly liked this one because it reminds
me of our winter scenery right here in
South Western Illinois. The snow banks and
partially frozen stream left no doubt that this
photo was taken on a bright, cold winter's day.

About This Piece,
These weathered Bristle-Cone Pine Trees are
centuries old, yet they cling stubbornly to
life. They exist on the
extreme edge of timberline at
elevations often above 10,000
feet. Some living specimens date
back to biblical times. This
studio painting was made from
memory aided by photos and a 1970
edition of Arizona Highways
Magazine.

HILLTOP VISTA
Location: Shaw Nature Reserve
Date Painted: November 30, 2002
Size: 12 X 9
inches
Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas Panel
Price: $325
|
Info
About This Piece,
I like the fall color palette presented by this
hilltop vista at the Shaw Nature Reserve: a
combination of brown, red and orange foliage
above the rich gold of the prairie grasses, The
dark shadows and browns of the dried weeds and
seed pods offered interesting contrasts in the
foreground. It was a perfect Fall day with light
breezes and a few clouds. I enjoyed the
company of other artists working nearby, as well
as visiting with families who came out out for a
hike or a picnic on this fine day. |

WINTER IN THE
UPPER GEYSER BASIN
Location, Yellowstone National
Park
Date Painted: February 3, 2008
Size: 18 X 24 inches
Medium: Oil on Pintura Canvas Panel
Price: $*******
|
Info
About This Piece,
This painting depicts the beginning of winter in
the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National
Park. The scene is from the cover of a magazine
entitled "Nature Conservancy Landmarks, Winter
2006". I thought that the fresh snow on the
rocks and tree branches was beautiful, and the
fog- shrouded trees in the distance made a nice
composition. I was also liked the swift clear
water flowing from the geyser basin, and the
pink and yellow highlights in the morning sky. |

Info
About This Piece,
I painted this scene while looking out of the
south-east window of my studio on a foggy winter
morning. The early morning sun illuminated
layers of fog that had settled into the valley
during the night, and it created sparkling
highlights on each snow-laden branch and twig.

Info
About This Piece,
A group of plein air artists gathered at
Jefferson Barracks in February to capture this
winter scene. This old quarry is reportedly
where limestone blocks were obtained for
construction of the original buildings at this
historic Army Post. Many of these buildings are
still in use today. The day was bitter cold with
a sharp wind blowing up the river, but the sun
appeared briefly to help brighten the day.
